Get More from Your Holiday Gatherings
We’ve entered a season of celebrations. Whether they’re at work, in your neighborhood, or at your home, holiday gatherings typically have one thing in common: Food—and lots of it! If you’re trying to stay on track with your health goals, you can have (delicious!) fun without depriving yourself. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your holidays.
Aim to Maintain
If you’ve been on a weight loss journey, remember: You don’t have to lose to win this season! Focus on maintaining—and be kind to yourself. If you do indulge at one get-together, don’t get down. Every meal is an opportunity to make a healthy choice.
Prioritize Protein and Fiber
At the holiday table, start by filling your plate with vegetables and fruits, then focus on lean meats. The fiber and protein will help fill you up, so you’ll feel more satisfied and go lighter on the more indulgent foods.
Focus on More than the Meal
Curb mindless eating—and make time for what matters—by catching up with family, friends, or co-workers. This will naturally slow down your eating pace. When you are done with the meal, get away from the food. Offer to help clean up. Chew gum. Sip tea. Initiate a game. In other words, curb your desire to munch.
Note: Since everyone’s health history and nutritional needs are so different, please make sure that you talk with your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that‘s right for you.
