While it’s one thing to cook for yourself or your family, it’s quite another to get ready for a large group. If you’re gearing up to host a big get-together, a chef with lots of experience shares some helpful tips on cooking for a crowd.
Know Your Audience
Design a menu that suits your crew. “I always start with things like age, style, and where they like to dine out,” says Chef O’Brien Tingling, who has overseen many big events. Some people want traditional favorites; others are more creative. Know your guests—and any allergies or preferences—so you can all celebrate together.
Think Seasonally
Serve in-season produce to ensure your meal is fresh, balanced, and nutritious (it may be easier on your wallet, too!) Fall and winter favorites like Brussels sprouts, pears, butternut squash, beets, and apples are packed with flavor, color, and nutritional benefits. Bonus: If you get food from local sources, you’ll have a story to tell, too.
Do the Math
While recommended serving sizes are important, our chefs advise estimating a little more for a party so you don’t run out. Remember side dishes will stretch any meal! And here’s a hint to adjust for a crowd: The free recipes on the Feed Your Potential 365 web site have a built-in recipe converter (PrepWizard) that takes the guesswork out of the equation.
Note: Since everyone’s health history and nutritional needs are so different, please make sure that you talk with your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that‘s right for you.
