A Perfectly Balanced Fitness Routine
People who work out regularly tend to fall into one of two camps: The cardio warriors or the heavy lifters. But it doesn’t have to be—and likely shouldn’t be—an either/or situation!
Cardio and strength training each offer benefits of their own—and both are important for lifelong fitness. Together they help make sure you’re getting a fitness plan that is both balanced and beneficial.
Exercise 101
Which is which? According to the American Heart Association, cardio (also known as aerobic or endurance) exercise is any activity that gets your breathing and heart rate up. Think: Walking, jogging, swimming, jumping rope. Strength (or resistance) training works muscles to make them stronger, e.g., free weights or machines, bands, and classic body weight resistance exercises like pushups.
Reframing Fitness for All
If you think fitness plans that include both strength and cardio are just for athletes in serious training, think again! Being physically active can improve anyone’s quality of life. Want to keep up with energetic friends, kids, or pets? Explore a new city on foot? A regular, balanced fitness plan can help you achieve the things you want—and may even help you avoid health issues.
Ways to Step It Up
If you’re still intimidated, remember: All movement counts, it all adds up, and do what you love! Something is always better than nothing. Start small and build as you go. This approach should help you get started and stick with it. Get ideas for cardio and strength exercises on the blog.
Note: Since everyone’s health history and nutritional needs are so different, please make sure that you talk with your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that‘s right for you.
