If You Can’t Stand the Heat …
… try new ways to keep cool in the kitchen! Great summer meals don’t require a hot oven or hours simmering on the stove. Here are three ideas—and a few recipes—to help you keep your cool all summer long.
Build a Bowl
Your pantry and refrigerator are probably already packed with great ingredients to make an entrée salad or healthy grain bowl. From rotisserie chicken and canned tuna to cooked whole grains and freshly chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, and herbs from the garden, get creative and use what you have!
Take It Slow
Using your slow cooker in the summer months is a great way to keep the heat low and maximize convenience. After all, who doesn’t want to come home in the evening to an already prepared, hearty meal? If you don’t have a favorite slow cooker recipe, try adapting our Chicken Tagine recipe below.
Grillin’ and Chillin’
Of course, there’s always everyone’s favorite summertime cooking method: Grilling outside! In addition to meat and poultry, you can grill fresh ears of sweet corn, veggies, fruit, and even slices of sweet potato for a complete meal that satisfies—and keeps the heat outside.
Note: Since everyone’s health history and nutritional needs are so different, please make sure that you talk with your doctor and a registered dietitian to get advice about the diet and exercise plan that‘s right for you.
